NFL Tebow: Jaguars Fans Don't Want?

In a discussion with Jaguars GM Gene Smith, the majority of Jags fans did NOT want the team to draft Tim Tebow. It was not a landslide, but it was clear (55%-45%).

It was also unclear whether they were talking about the team's 1st-round pick... or not taking Tebow AT ALL. I presume they would be happy to have him as a 2nd- or 3rd-rounder.

Here's the thing: Will Jaguars season-ticket holders revoke their tickets if the team drafts Tebow? Now compare that to the NEW people that will buy season tickets if Tebow is on the team.

That said: If the team was going to draft Tebow -- particularly in the 1st round -- they were going to have to do it under the cover of overwhelming fan support.

It appears they do not have that, at least among the paying fans.

(If you're wondering whether this data point contributes to me wanting to revise my long-standing theory that the Jags will take Tebow in the 1st round with the No. 10 pick, it does.)

  1. Only a small percentage of season ticket holders took part in this (800). So this might not indicate the opinion of all season ticket holders. And I wonder how many of those 5000 new season tickets are b/c people have been assuming that Tebow will be drafted by the Jags.

    "He suggested he wants to trade down in the first round to get more picks."

    So the Jags might not even be the 10th pick of the 1st Round by the time we get to Draft Day?

  2. Considering the Jaguars only have like 17 fans, I don't believe this survey can be considered scientific, accurate, or even relevant by any stretch of the imagination.

    The amount of people in northern Florida who would buy tickets if Tebow were drafted vs. the amount of current Jaguars season ticket holders who would be upset if the Jags passed on, say, Derrick Morgan, is so lopsided as to make this question useless and makes the selection of Tebow (at some point in the draft) even more imperative. Surely the Jags braintrust is aware of this.

  3. Tyler, completely agree with you. One of the articles that mentioned this story said that the GM said they would never draft him at #9 because he couldn't come in right away and challenge Garrard for the job, and since they don't have any 2nd round picks, I don't see them getting him at this point. But I agree with you, I live in West Palm, a Dolphins fan, but I would go to a couple Jax games if they drafted him and I don't even live there!! They are just looking for justification to not take him- my guess is they don't want him for whatever reason.
